In just two short days we will be taking Jenna to the MTC as she will be starting her mission in California Los Angeles mission.

We spoke in church today on the Book of Mormon and she did a wonderful job. Tonight we had a get together with family friends. We had a lots of treats and a special sister missionary cake.

We had a wonderful Christmas made even better because it arrived on the Sabbath Day. Christopher decided to set his alarm for 6:30 am and off course slept right through it. It went off for about 20 minutes before I finally shut it off. Thankfully, it didn't wake up either Emrie or Isaac, both deep sleepers.

We finally woke them up a little after 7:00 am and after they each opened one gift we went to church where we heard an inspiring message from Bishop Sampson and sang Christmas carols.

After church we enjoyed opening gifts together and our annual visit from Grandpa and Grandma Davis.

Jenna received a bunch of stuff for her mission, including a new and very cool Sony camera. Christopher enjoyed several art items including some sculpting clay and tools. He spent much of the day building a cool skull. Isaac, our football nut, received a helmet, gloves, and some action figures. Emrie is enjoying her new Calico Critters and some dolls.

We missed Matthew, Aubrey, Cooper, and Bentley who were in Boise. We did celebrate earlier in the week before they left. Unfortunately, Cindy was home with a stomach bug so she had to join us vis Skype -- oh the blessings of technology.

Isaac's youth football coach suggested he try wrestling. Well, he has been giving it a shot. The problem is there is no one in his grade (kindergarten) his weight. So, we had him move up to the first grade and at the Sugar City tournament he was still the biggest kid at 67 pounds. Thus far he has won 3 matches and lost 1. he is having a good time and he is a good sport.

Jenna received her mission call and she will be serving in the CALIFORNIA LOS ANGELES mission. As part of her mission she will serve in the Los Angeles Temple Visitor's Center. She will enter the MTC on February 1. She was super excited because her childhood best friend Chelsey Hillman also received her call, will enter the MTC on February 1, and is going to the Ohio Cleveland Mission. Chelsey will also be serving part of her mission in the Kirtland visitor's centers.

Fall Horseback Ride

After several days of snowy and rainy weather, the clouds broke on Saturday so we decided to go on a quick ride. We were joined by Jenna's friend Davin and we saddled up all four horses and rode down to the Teton River. The water in the slough before the river was incredibly calm and with the fall colors and evening clouds made from some spectacular reflections. Oh, and Isaac saw a dead beaver and just moments later Bullseye got spooked and after three bucks sent Isaac tumbling. Thanks to a good helmet and a tough little boy, he got back on and rode back across the creek.

Well, we finished off the last of the football games for the fall. Isaac had a blast and his cowboys won more than they lost. The team improved each game and we Isaac made some fast friends, especially Jett. They are in the same grade and they are already looking forward to next year. Well, we now have two dogs, sisters Gretel and Charlie. Yes, Charlie is a female. Cindy comments that Gretel is her dog and Charlie is the kid's. At least on this occasion, both dogs were pretty friendly with Isaac.

Isaac's First Flag Football Games

Isaac had his first flag football games for the K-1 league. Isaac plays for the Cowboys. They lost the first game 4-1 with Isaac scoring a touchdown on a pass play. They won the second game 4-0 with Isaac scoring on a hand off.

He really likes to play defense and he is a really good sport.

We enjoyed a quick Labor Day excursion to the Piney Butte Craters for some Dutch oven dinner, a little horseback riding and some family pictures thanks to Matthew's friends Kenne and Danielle. We were accompanied by Grandpa Dale, Lottie Pickering, and Kegan Davis.

Horseback Ride into Yellowstone National Park

On Saturday we embarked on what we hoped was a trip into Union Falls in Yellowstone National Park. The trip in is between 7 and 8 miles, but at about mile 5 we learned from some other riders that the park rangers were issuing tickets for any horses that did not have proof of a Coggins test. Unfortunately, we have not had our horses tested so rather than risking a fine, we settled for picking huckleberries and enjoying the ride out. We were all a little disappointed, but are glad we aren't facing some hefty fines.

Our good friend Devin Shaum joined us and we learned some good lessons on how to be real horsemen and women. Our niece Lottie rode Bullseye, Christopher and I shared Kipper and Cindy rode Dan. Devin did give Christopher some time on his Arabian Surprise.

Attention Uncle Chan, you can see from these pictures that I have found my cowboy boots, and even wore some of Devin's chaps. Now to find a really good cowboy hat!

Today we fulfilled Christopher's number one wish for our vacation, trying to land a big crab. Well, we landed lots but no real keepers. We even caught a starfish. It was fun and the weather in Newport, Oregon was great.

Our summer vacation has taken us to Cannon Beach with a quick stop at Seaside. The last time we were here Jenna was 3, that was 17 years ago. The kids had a good time playing on the beach and especially exploring Haystack Rock at low tide.

Isaac Summer Sports, so far

Isaac just finished his first season of soccer. He loved it and many days would talk his dad into going to Smith Park with three balls in tow, a soccer ball, basketball, and football. We are learning he is a bit of a showoff as he picks the sport (ball) that has the most activity in the park.

He also just finished football camp where he was recognized as having the longest kick and most number of catches for the kindergarten and first grade group. He is easily the biggest kid for his age.

Ride to Green Lake, Grand Tetons

On Saturday we enjoyed nearly perfect weather and a 13 mile round trip ride to Green Lake in the Grand Tetons. A good friend of mine has been telling me about Green Lake for years. We really enjoyed the ride and especially the wildflowers which were abundant. We initially took the wrong trail which took us straight up a mountain, but once on the right path we enjoyed a gentle climb to the top of a pass, then some fairly steep switchbacks that led us down into the Green Lakes basin.

We only made it to the first lake which was full of fish, lush meadows, surrounded by large granite peaks. Cindy rode Dan who at times acted like a young horse and once took Cindy straight up the mountain, bypassing the last of the switcbacks. Christopher was on Bullseye, who we are learning is a very steady and reliable ride. I was on Kipper, who at 23 still has lots of miles and I enjoyed his smooth gate.

Isaac is enjoying his first year of soccer. He is on the Lincoln School team 1. His team is made up of 5-7 year old kids, and while he is still 5 he is the biggest kid on the team. As parents, we are learning we may need to carry a birth certificate to let parents know he really is in the right age division.

He is having a great time and we are enjoying watching him. He is learning to play hard and fair and even cheat a little (unknowingly). In one of these short video clips he throws it into himself, we are pretty sure that is illegal.

Thanks to Grandpa Dorman, we have a pretty good stable of horses, plus a great trailer for getting out and about. We recently took excursions to Southeast Idaho's sand dunes, and Harriman State Park. We have been to the dunes several times, but this was our first time as a family to Harriman. We went on just one of the many loops and will return soon to enjoy the many rides that go along the river, past mountain lakes, and up over high mountain ridges.

We enjoyed a really beautiful Saturday hiking in the mountains near Kilgore, Idaho. The drive was gorgeous and the meadows, ranchlands, and mountains where especially green because of our wet spring. The hike to Aldous Lake was just 1.3 miles, with an additional climb of 1 mile to Hancock Lake. Emrie and Isaac where great hikers and Isaac caught a dozen frogs, and saw one very large one that he said had candy growing on him. Jenna brought along her friend Alssya, and Matthew was joined by his father-in-law Lance, his brother-in-law Spencer, and their friend Cassy.

We just returned from the McInelly family reunion in Escalante, Utah. We had a wonderful time visiting with family and exploring the beauty of southern Utah. We enjoyed our traditional hike to Calf Creek Falls, but also explored Devil's Rock Garden the slot canyons of Peekaboo and Spooky Gulch, and a trek down the Hole in Rock. Christopher also enjoyed hunting for Indian artifacts and we did discover some ancient pictographs and a couple of old Indian camps.

Matthew and Aubrey graduated from BYU-Idaho this week. They will be here for the summer and Matthew will be starting a new job sometime later this year for B1DMS, a software management system for automotive dealerships.

Remembering Lolly

For the past 16 years we have had the most loyal dog in Lolly. For the first 8 years of her life she enjoyed some country living in Sugar City on or our 3.3 acres. Lolly spent hours herding both horses and kids. For the past 8 years she has guarded her 1/2 block on Main St. Rexburg. Her health has really gone down hill this past year, losing her hearing, severe arthritis, and a host of other ailments. Sadly we had to put her to sleep today and she will be missed.

This all happened as Isaac was getting ready for bed, hence the pajamas. For Emrie's wedding dress, she chose one of Jenna's tops.

Grandma McInelly Funeral

When your grandmother passes away at the age of 98 and lived such an exemplary life, the funeral was more of a celebration than time of sadness. She was a widow of more than 40 years and we know she is enjoying a reunion with our Grandpa Mc, and others including our uncle and brother Bryce and our son Dale. Our Grandma will be missed, but we look forward to the time we will be together again. We had a wonderful time returning to Escalante and seeing some many close family and friends.

On January 3 we lost our wonderful grandmother, great-grandmother, and great-great-grandmother Twila McInelly who passed away at the age of 98. We made several trips to Southern Utah to visit grandma, who was always positive and remembered all the names of her 200+ grandchildren.

She lived a wonderful life and legacy. We will miss Grandma Mack.

We had a wonderful time visiting family and friends, and Grandma Davis even made her rounds just a couple weeks after he knee replacement. We have had the most fun with our new boxing gloves and while we have had some good matches, thankfully no serious injuries.

Jenna Concert

Jenna is singing in Vocal Union, BYU-Idaho's jazz choir. They did not allow any photos or video of the concert, so we had to settle for a couple of pictures after the show. The concert was great, Jenna had a solo, and Santa Claus showed up at the end much to the delight of Isaac and Emrie.

Making Biscuits

A Sunday tradition in the Davis home is making buttermilk biscuits. Isaac and Emrie helped today and the biscuits turned out just great. Steve has a goal of perfecting a biscuit recipe, the key to flaky biscuits, use real butter and instead of cutting the butter into the dry mix, grate frozen butter cubes using a cheese grater. Also, do not over knead the dough.

Here is our recipe:

2 cups of flour
1 tsp salt
1 T sugar
1 tsp cream of tarter
2 1/2 tsp baking powder
1 tsp baking soda

After mixing dry mix, grate in tow cubes of frozen butter

Lightly mix then add 3/4 cup of buttermilk

Knead dough 8-10 times

Roll out dough and cut into squares or circles.

Bake at 400 degrees for 10-12 minutes or until golden brown!

A Dalmation, Pirates, a Superman who Became a Pirate

We enjoyed a fun Halloween at Dale and Chrissy's, who now live in the perfect trick-or-treating neighborhood. Emrie was a dalmation, Isaac superman, but he later traded with Grant, who started out the night as a pirate. Matthew, Aubrey, and Cooper were pirates. Jenna was an 80's girl.

Darby Canyon Hike

Matthew's Father-in-Law (along with his son Lance, daughter Maddie, and friend Katrina) was in town for the weekend and he invited us to hike up Darby Canyon to the Wind Caves. We had a perfect fall day, the colors were spectacular and we had a great time. Christopher and Isaac were troopers and really loved the caves.

This hike will now be on may annual list. It is just 3.5 miles in with a great reward at the end with a total elevation gain of 1,800 feet.

Summer Hike in the Tetons

We have been hoping to hike to Table Mountain all summer and finally got the chance on Saturday, September 11. As we approached Driggs we could see that the Tetons had received a bit of snow -- boy were we surprised. We about gave up half way to the top, but then we hooked up with some BYUI students and our pride wouldn't let us quit.

We did learn that if you are hiking on a sunny day and over vast snow fields, that we should not have forgotten sun screen!

Martin's Cove, Sixth Crossing, and Rock Creek Hollow

For the past several months we have been busily planning a pioneer trek to the LDS historic sites in central Wyoming. From August 4-7 we accompanied 63 youth and leaders to Martin's Cove, Sixth Crossing, and Rock Creek Hollow. We were able to take all of our children, except Matthew. While we were busy with planning and trying to keep everything going according to plan, we had a wonderful time and enjoyed our time together learning about our pioneer heritage, feeling the spirit, and growing closer as a family.

One of our favorites, which we do almost every summer is Union Falls in Yellowstone. Union Falls is the tallest waterfall in Yellowstone and nearby is Ouzel Falls, a hot spring swimming hole which is just the perfect temperature for a summer dip.

The hike is 16 miles round trip, which makes this great swimming hole hard enough to reach that usually, and thankfully this year, we have the place all too ourselves. The only unwelcome guests were an unusual number of horse flies and mosquitoes, hence we ate our lunches mostly submerged.

This year the hiking party included Dale, Reese, Taylor, Steve, Jenna and her friend Melinda.

Annual Alumni Day at Lagoon

We just returned from our annual alumni day at Lagoon. The kids had a great time and Isaac our very tall 4-year old was able to ride nearly all of the big kid rides and he did and loved it (though we were only able to get picture of he and Emrie in the kiddie area).

Brown's Point and Dash Point, near Tacoma, WA

We took a quick trip to Brown's Point, followed by Dash Point, both on the Puget Sound. Isaac really enjoyed looking for crab's under rocks and then later talking to real crab fishermen, including an 8 year old boy named Justin at Dash Point. The day was beautiful and actually very hot for this area approaching 100 degrees.

Point Defiance Zoo and Aquarium

One of our favorite Tacoma activities is a visit to Point Defiance Zoo and Aquarium. The kids loved seeing live sharks, an animal show, a tiger, a gigantic walrus, and much more. It was especially nice to enjoy the day with Matthew, Aubrey, and Cooper.

We enjoyed seeing a massive fireworks display courtesy of Brian Wilp and the kids were so happy to play with Madeline, Kayla, Gunner, and Nolan. Of course, Grandpa Dorman was the grand host and the food was fabulous!!

New Trampoline

Last year we bought a trampoline from Wal Mart and it was a piece of junk. We took it back and thankfully they accepted our return. So, this year we spent about twice as much for an Air Master and it is about 10 times better. Needless to say, the kids love it!

A Visit to the Draper Utah Temple

We made a quick trip to the Draper, Utah Temple for Josh and Amber's Wedding. The weather was a bit windy, but we enjoyed the wonderful views of the temple and the Salt Lake Valley.

Isaac Photo Shoot

The marketing folks at BYU-Idaho recently requested to use Isaac for a photo shoot. He will soon be on the cover of the KBYI, the university's public radio station, program guide. They have been using a series of little kids with musical instruments. While actually Isaac does not play the saxophone, he had fun making some noise, and he was a very polite, charming, and we think photogenic, model.

Isaac and Emrie fell asleep all snuggled up earlier this afternoon. They really do love each other and it is fun to watch them play, tease, wrestle, and sometimes even cuddle.

Cindy and I returned from Martin's Cove and we are now officially trained to be trek leaders. We were so impressed and moved by both the spirit of the place and the enthusiasm of the missionaries. We have never seen so many grown brothers and sisters weep as they shared their testimonies and stories of our pioneer ancestors. The other thing that struck us was just how much fun these missionaries had in serving. We learned that these pioneer sites are both sacred and hallowed and were often referred to as the Wyoming temple. We both felt the spirit and were moved to tears as we learned more about the Martin and Willie handcart companies and associated with dedicated missionaries and other trek leaders.

The grounds, museums, visitor center, old forts, barns, camp areas, and even the restrooms were immaculate and first rate. Through it all, the message was very clear, the purpose of trek is to:

Provide spiritual opportunities, under leadership of the priesthood, where youth can gain a deeper appreciation of the principles of faith, obedience, and sacrifice.

Kids Growing Up

Here are a few pictures of our blooming kids. Isaac is now riding a 2-wheeler all by himself, right on track for age 4. Where he is ahead of schedule is losing his teeth. At 4 and 1/2 he already has 2 permanent teeth coming in and has lost one baby tooth. No wonder people think he is 7, but yet he is just 4. Emrie is showing lots of spunk and of course we are missing Cooper who is spending the summer with his mom and dad in Tacoma. This past week we had the pleasure of having Dale and Grant down from North Idaho. Dale helped us remodel our kitchen lighting which you can see behind Emrie.

Pioneer Trek

Cindy and I will be leaving this week for Martin's Cove where we will be trained to lead the Rexburg 15th Ward trek later this summer. In preparation we have been researching pioneer histories, particularly those from the Martin and Willie companies. The stores are truly tragic and inspiring. Our Trip to Kooskia

We recently took a quick trip to North Idaho to visit the Pickerings, mostly to see Reese who has just returned from Russia and his mission. We also got to check in on Taylor who is recuperating from his snowboarding accident and a broken neck. Thankfully he will be okay. The kids chased chickens, visited a gentleman with an impressive trophy room, and enjoyed the beautifies of Northern Idaho.

This past weekend we celebrated Sherrel and Mary Davis's 50th Golden Anniversary at Badger Creek, BYU-Idaho Recreation property near the Teton Mountains.

We had nearly all of the family there and had a great time.

A Little Isaac Update

Isaac is now approaching 4 1/2 years old and is just under 50 inches tall, that is 4 feet plus. We recently took a picture of Isaac in front of our makeshift board where we periodically measure heights. The line just above his head was for Christopher, when he was just over 4 feet tall and at 7 years plus.

Isaac also loves being an uncle and he is especially gentle with Cooper.

Emrie likes to help and get into things. She is turning into an excellent climber and thankfully not a faller. She discovered a pack of gum on a top shelf in the kitchen and helped herself to most of it. She does like to climb onto the counter top and help with breakfast, in the case beating some egg whites and sorting the eggs.

He's Arrived

We are so pleased to announce that Matthew and Aubrey's little baby boy arrived at 6:37 am this morning, February 7, 2010. He was 6 pounds and 13 ounces and 19 inches long. Matthew and Aubrey are still deciding on a name, but you can tell they are very pleased to have their new baby, who seemed very content and happy, and he even seemed to be singing in his sleep.

Rexburg Snow Festival 2010

We attended the annual Rexburg Snow Festival which is held at Smith Park, just one block from our home. The kids enjoyed sledding, buggy rides, snow bowling (Emrie got a strike!), and some hot chocolate.

Kitchen Fun

Emrie and Isaac can play about anywhere, but often it ends up right on the kitchen floor. Emrie started off doing some drawing. Unfortunately, dad did not realize she was using a permanent marker, and yes she did get some on her pants and shirt. Fortunately, they were her old play clothes.

Asleep at the Computer

Emrie and Isaac have discovered the Wiggles and Kipper the Dog on Neflix, which they mostly watch on the computer. I noticed the noise from the dining room (where we have our computer) became very quiet. The show had ended and no sight or sound of Emrie. Well, that was because she had fallen fast asleep sometime near the end of the show.

Christopher turned 13 on January 9. He is now a teenager, and we have noticed this school that has suddenly become very aware of his appearance, like the right clothes, hair just right, etc. We had a fun celebration with Matthew and Aubrey.

Sledding at Sugar Hill

We have recently received some fresh new snow so we decided to head for Sugar hill. We used to live in Sugar City and the kids have enjoyed sledding there because it is a decent size hill, but not too big. We brought along or dog Lolli, and she enjoyed acting like a young pup for a little while.

A Pioneer Song

Jenna has been super busy this past semester as usual with singing in the choir, dancing with the Idaho Ballroom Academy, and participating in the BYUI production of A Pioneer Song. This musical ran 9 nights and Jenna really enjoyed her role in this cast. She was a member of the chorus and had 10 lines, not bad for a new freshman. She is looking forward to continuing her musical studies at BYU-Idaho. Here are some pictures after her final performance and one we stole off the web of the female case rehearsing before going on stage.

We all survived Thanksgiving and enjoyed some time off and days of sleeping in -- sort of. We enjoyed our snowy weather, finding Christmas trees, cooking and eating, watching football (with Emrie bringing in a chair for a real close view), and watching Jenna dance at the Rexburg talent showcase.
